I currently teach Fiction Writing and Composition at the University of Virginia. My classes are based around readings, experimentation, building creative stamina and guided peer workshops. I am the inaugural winner of the Sydney Blair award for Excellence in Teaching.

I have taught workshops and led projects in higher education settings includingThe University of Westminster, London Southbank University and Hong Kong Institute of Education , led several term-long projects at The BRIT School for the performing arts and devised and led creative-engagement workshops for museums including London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

I also created a series of monologue writing workshops with artist Paula Varjack, which were delivered in 11 different London primary schools in 2016, for Eastside Educational Trust.

Students say:

"This class was phenomenal. Anna is one of the most caring, insightful, and engaging professors I've had in my 3 years at UVA. Workshop pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I felt safe doing that in this class. I a™m leaving this class a better writer and completely validated in my desire to write.'

'[Anna's] positive attitude and useful feedback made everyone excited to write and also feel accepted enough to share work and give honest feedback. It was obvious that she was truly passionate about the subject matter and wanted to genuinely help everyone grow as individuals and as writers.'

'Before [taking this class], I wasn't sure if I wanted to pursue creative writing, but now I'm positive!'

I have led writing and storytelling, poetry and performance projects for organizations including Young Vic, Battersea Arts Centre and St Christopher's Hospice.

Highlights include:

The Cut Project (pictured left) - Young Vic. A creative oral history project, where I collected stories with my collaborator Lily Einhorn from residents of the Waterloo area and created an installation and storytelling event, where the participants performed.

Creative Circle - artsdepot.A weekly creative class for people aged 65+ which I ran for a year, exploring writing, storytelling, performance and crafts, culminating in a public sharing.

Autumn - artsdepot - A new performance work created over 6 weekly sessions with learning-disabled young adults.A collaboration with Rachel Lincoln.

Glow -Battersea Arts Centre. An intergenerational project created with collaborator Kirsty Harris, elder groups and primary school children culminating in a poetry-installation at BAC which was open to the public for 2 months.

Listen - St Christopher's Hospice

A new performance work created with students from the BRIT School and people with life-limiting illnesses based on their experiences.

Presence and voice work for writers

I work with individuals and groups who want to perform their own texts with more confidence and presence.

In 2019, I coached the University of Virginia Poetry Slam Team (pictured) as they prepared compete at the College Unions Poetry Slam, working with team members on their individual and group poems.

I have also worked with writers in preparation for literary readings.

I firmly believe that delivering one's own writing well is about a set of teachable skills. I use my background in performance to work with writers on posture, voice, confidence, breaking a text into moments and connection with the audience.
